Lamar County Schools offers two distinguished programs, Mississippi Scholars and Mississippi Scholars Tech Master, designed to prepare students for successful futures beyond high school.
The Mississippi Scholars program is geared toward students who plan to attend a four-year university. It encourages a rigorous, college-preparatory academic track, requiring students to complete advanced coursework in core subjects like English, math, science, and social studies. Additional requirements for students graduating in 2022 and later include:
-
Minimum GPA: 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
-
Minimum ACT Score: 19 composite score
-
Community Service: 80 hours
-
Attendance: 95% attendance rate with no out-of-school suspensions
The Mississippi Scholars Tech Master program is for students interested in pursuing a career-technical path, either by entering the workforce directly after graduation or attending a community college for a technical certification. This program emphasizes a specific career and technical education (CTE) pathway, requiring students to complete four credits in a single area of study, such as health sciences or construction. It has similar requirements to the Mississippi Scholars program, with the key difference being the test score requirement:
-
Minimum GPA: 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
-
Minimum Test Score: A composite ACT score of 19 OR a minimum ASVAB score of 36 OR a Silver Level WorkKeys score.
-
Community Service: 80 hours
-
Attendance: 95% attendance rate with no out-of-school suspensions
Benefits of Participation
Participation in these programs offers significant benefits that go far beyond a diploma.
-
Special Recognition: Students who successfully complete the requirements receive special recognition upon graduation, such as a cord or medallion, highlighting their commitment to academic and career excellence.
-
Enhanced Resumes and Applications: The designation of Mississippi Scholar or Tech Master on college applications, scholarship forms, and job resumes demonstrates a student's dedication, discipline, and readiness for future challenges.
-
Scholarship Opportunities: The rigorous curriculum and high standards of the programs make students more competitive for a wide range of scholarships, including those offered by businesses, community colleges, and four-year universities that value the dedication these programs represent. While there isn't one single "Mississippi Scholars" scholarship, the program's requirements align with the criteria for many academic and merit-based grants and scholarships. For example, high-achieving students may be eligible for grants like the Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant (MESG), which requires a minimum 3.5 GPA and a 29 on the ACT. Local businesses and community colleges also often offer scholarships specifically for Mississippi Scholars and Tech Master participants.

Q: What are the requirements for me to graduate?
A: Click Here to view the Graduation Requirements.
Q: How do I get a transcript?
A: Click Here to Request a Transcript Online (Note: You must request a transcript online for any and all purposes.)
Q: What is the difference between AP (Advanced Placement) and DC (Dual Credit)?
A: AP are college-level advanced placement courses. Students in AP courses can pay, at the end of the course, to take the AP exam. A score of 3 or better on the AP exam can be used at some colleges in place of a college course. Note that not all colleges accept AP test scores in place of a college class. Check with the college you are planning to attend for specific requirements.
DC are college-level courses that count as a high school credit and a college course. These courses require a fee. Most colleges will accept these courses, but you should always check with the college you are planning to attend for specific requirements.
